Abstract
Consists of manuscripts and letters of American novelist and Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner and related materials, including manuscripts of Maurice Coindreau's translation into French of four Faulkner novels.

The collection consists of manuscripts and letters of Faulkner and related materials, including manuscripts of Maurice Coindreau's translation into French of four Faulkner novels: As I Lay Dying, Requiem for a Nun, The Sound and the Fury, The Wild Palms. Among the eight letters included in the collection two are addressed to Coindreau, dated 1932 and 1937, in which Faulkner offers his assistance and gratitude to the translator. There is a small, pencil-drawn map in the hand of the author of the mythical town of Jefferson, along with eleven typed manuscripts of essays, speeches, and short stories, many of which have holograph corrections.
Among the manuscripts included in the collection are "Afternoon of a Cow," "Freedom American Style," "By the People," "Mississippi," "On Privacy," and "An Innocent at Rinkside." Miscellaneous materials include photographs of the author, copies of television plays of Faulkner's works, copies of essays and articles about Faulkner, and a large assortment of newspaper clippings pertaining to his literary career.

- Acquisition:
10 Faulkner transcripts are a gift of Harold Ober. Typed letter from Faulkner to Oates and 17 page typescript of "On Fear..." are a gift of Prof. Whitney J. Oates. Letter from Carl Van Vechten to Meriwether is a gift of James B. Meriwether. Microfilm of drafts of "There was a Queen" and "Sanctuary" is a gift of Linton Massey. Script of adaptation of "As I Lay Dying" is a gift of Lewis Freedman. Seven letters by Faulkner are a gift of Harry A. Decker. Various Faulkner, Dos Passos, and Larbaud manuscripts along with 2 Letters from Faulkner to Coindreau are a gift of Prof. M.E. Coindreau.

The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.
