Abstract
Warren Worth Bailey was the editor of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania newspaper The Daily Democrat from 1893 until his death in 1928 and also served as a Democratic member of the House of Representatives from 1913-1917.

The collection consists of Bailey's correspondence with various political figures, family, and friends as well as materials, including clippings, about his election campaigns, the Bailey Bill for the extension of free mail service (1913-1914), a war tax, and the issue of military preparedness. Condolences are also included that were sent to his widow after his death in 1928.

Bailey
Warren Worth Bailey was born in New Winchester, Indiana on January 8, 1855. He moved to Illinois with his parents in 1863 and then worked as a telegrapher. In 1875, he joined the Kansas (Ill.) News and learned the printing trade. He purchased the Vincennes News in 1877 and later moved to Chicago in 1887 and was a staff member of the Daily News and later of the Evening Mail. His published the Johnstown, Pennsylvania newspaper The Daily Democrat starting in 1893 that was devoted to the single-tax principle. While unsuccessful in his run as a Democratic candidate in 1906 for Congress, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Baltimore in 1912 and was elected to the sixty-third and sixty-fourth Congresses. He served as a Democrat in the House of Representatives from 1913-1917. He was unsuccessful when he ran for reelection in 1916 and again in 1920, 1922, and 1926. As a result, Bailey resumed journalism in Johnstown. He died on November 9, 1928

- Acquisition:
The Warren Worth Bailey Papers were deposited at Princeton University by the Bailey family in 1948.
Two photographs and a postcard found in the Mudd Library were added to the collection in 2016. The accession number associated with this material is ML.1000.009.
