Consists chiefly of academic documents of American politician Fulton McMahon while he was attending the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University).

Scope and Contents

The collection consists chiefly of report cards, examination schedules, and printed examination sheets of Fulton McMahon while he was a student at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Some of the examination papers include handwritten answers and notations. Also included are New York State Department of Instruction's examinations for state certificates in various subjects, dated July 11, 1883; correspondence and a newspaper clipping about "The Ohio Club" which was organized by the students from Ohio at Princeton University; and a clipping about Fulton being counsel for the "City Club" in its prosecution of charges against the "Tammany" District Attorney of New York County and a member of the Good Government Club. In addition, there is material relating to McMahon's brother, Charles Sturgeon McMahon: two certificates (1887) from the Preparatory School of Princeton, N.J., two bills ((1889-1890) from the College of New Jersey, and one letter (1911) by H. E. Alexander, editor and president of the Trenton True American.

Arranged into the following order: correspondence, College of New Jersey report cards and examination papers, New York State Department of Public Instruction examinations for state certification, miscellaneous papers relating to Charles Sturgeon McMahon.

Collection Creator Biography:

McMahon, Fulton, 1863-1934

Fulton McMahon, Princeton Class of 1884 and A.M. Princeton 1887, was born in Cambridge, Ohio. He was a practicing attorney in New York City and was also active in civic and sociological work there for many years. He was one of the organizers of the Good Government clubs and a secretary of the Hudson River Pontoon Bridge Corporation. The Fulton McMahon Research Fund in the graduate program of Princeton's Dept. of French and Italian was established by Alfred Foulet, Princeton Graduate School Class of 1927, in honor of McMahon. McMahon's death coincided with the fiftieth reunion of his class at Princeton University.
