Decoration: Feasts open with either 2- to 7-line silver and gold foliate initials outlined in red, or 1.5- to 2-line gold initials followed by smaller red and silver initials through the text. Celtic-style cross line drawing on lower pastedown.
Origin: Probably written and illuminated in the second quarter of the 11th century in Lorsch or Mainz.
Binding note
Contemporaneous binding. Germany, 11th century. Oak boards (10-11 mm thick) first covered in alum-tawed skin, and later covered over in a green silk. Sewn on 3 double cords. The binding was repaired after 1446, and again in the 19th century. The binding closes from back to front with a single clasp, but formerly closed with two straps attaching to metal pegs on the front foreedge; semi-circular tabs extending outwards from the cover at head and tail, have been cut off. Endbands with red secondary sewing. Illegible paper label on spine.
