Collection Creator Biography:

Princeton University. University Research Board

The University Research Board, which consists of six faculty members from different departments, is an advisory committee to the president on all research conducted at Princeton University. From 1946-1959, this function was performed by its predecessor, the 5-member Committee on Project Research and Invention.

With the amount of research being done at the University as well as the level of funding this research required skyrocketing, it was decided that a more formal supervisory board was necessary to formulate general policies for the conduct of sponsored research as well as to review research proposals, and so the University Research Board was formed in 1959. In the 1970s with such massive projects as the Plasma Physics Laboratory looming on the horizon and the number of incoming research proposals rising every year, most of the University Research Board's administrative responsibilities were transferred to the newly created Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA), while the University Research Board retained all of its committee and advisory functions. The Board now operates as a branch of ORPA.
