Abstract

The Jonathan Pennington Alward Collection consists of correspondence and assorted writings of the Basking Ridge, N.J., native Jonathan Pennington Alward—a clergyman, missionary, and graduate of Princeton (Class of 1836)—and his family.

Scope and Contents

Consists of works, correspondence, and journals of Alward. Included are sermons, school essays, letters to his parents, brother, and sisters while a student at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) and the Princeton Theological Seminary, and as a missionary. Alward's journals (1839-1840) describe his lengthy ocean voyage to Africa on board the Saluda, visits to various places in Liberia, West Africa, where he and others were seeking to establish a mission in the interests of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church, and their return to the United States after deciding on Cettra Kroo, Liberia, as a suitable place for the mission. Also present are a letter (circa 1840) by Alward to Walter Lowrie presenting an account of his travels and letters by his younger brother, Joseph (Class of 1853), and other family members.
