The Papers of Charles A. Eaton (1868-1953), congressman from New Jersey, focus on Eaton's role as a delegate to the United Nations Conference in San Francisco, in 1945.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Eaton's files on the United Nations Conference in San Francisco in 1945, at which he was a United States delegate and signatory of the Charter. There is correspondence from Harry S. Truman, Dean Acheson, and others involved with the conference, concerning Eaton's appointment as a delegate, copies of the charter, and photographs of the conference. There are also copies of a New Jersey General Assembly resolution written during Eaton's term as congressman concerning the United Nations Charter, and news clippings about Eaton's death on January 23, 1953.

Eaton, Charles A. (Charles Aubrey), 1868-1953

Charles A. Eaton was a Congressman from representing New Jersey's 4th and 5th congressional districts from 1925-1953. Born in Nova Scotia in 1868, Eaton was graduated from Acadia University, Nova Scotia on 1890 and from New Theological Institution, Newton Center, Massachusetts in 1893. He was an editor for Leslie's Weekly (1919-1920) the Toronto Globe, and the Boston Transcript between 1896-1901; head of the national service section of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation between 1917-1919. He entered politics in 1925. In February 1945 Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Eaton as a delegate to the United Nations Conference in San Francisco. In June 1945 Eaton was a signatory to the Charter. Eaton died in 1953.

The Papers were a gift of the Charles A. Eaton estate, given to Princeton University on November 17, 1954 (Accession #15381).
