Collection Creator Biography:

Cantril, Hadley, 1906-1969

Hadley Cantril was a psychologist who studied propaganda and public opinion research. Cantril studied at Dartmouth College before earning a PhD in psychology from Harvard Umiversity in 1931. In 1963 he began teaching at Princeton University, where he later became chair of the Department of Psychology. In addition to serving as President of the Institute for Propaganda Analysis, Cantril was a member of the Princeton Radio Research Project, which studied the public reaction to Orson Welles' War of the Worlds radio broadcast. Cantril's reasearch in the area of public opinion polling led to his work polling overseas during WWII. He subsequently advised several U.S. Presidents on public opinion studies both domestically and abroad.
