Abstract

Edith Hamilton was a classics scholar with a particular interest in Greek civilization. The collection consists of typescript and galley proofs of her book The Ever-Present Past, notebooks on classical civilization, and correspondence.

The collection contains typescript and galley proofs of Hamilton's work The Ever-Present Past, 29 notebooks on various topics relating to Greek/Roman civilization, and correspondence, consisting of letters to John Mason Brown (1931-1961) and Philip Burt Fisher, who was wounded in France during World War I, and from Storer B. Lunt, her publisher at W. W. Norton (1957). There are also copies of letters to Hamilton from John Mason Brown (1930-1963), some newspaper clippings, and some obituary material.

Hamilton became well-known through her writings as a popularizer of classical values and Greek civilization. A full-time writer from 1922 on, she became an honorary citizen of Athens, Greece, in 1950.

Acquisition:

Correspondence between Edith Hamilton and John Mason Brown is a gift of Mrs. John Mason Brown. Papers of Hamilton and letters from Ezra Pound to Edith Hamilton are a gift of Doris Fielding Reid. The Edith Hamilton letters to Philip Burt Fisher are a gift of Philip Fisher, Jr.
