Scope and Contents

The collection consists of selected correspondence and several documents of the Canadian publisher Hunter, Rose & Company. Correspondents include British authors James Payn, Charles Gibbon, and Frederick W. Robinson. In their letters these authors discuss matters such as royalties, copyrights, and the prospect of having Hunter, Rose & Company act as their publisher in Canada. Gibbon mentions sending proofs of his books What Will the World Say and In Honour Bound, and a serial called Ravelston which was to be published in a Canadian journal. Robinson talks about his novels Little Kay Kirby and Her Face Was Her Fortune. Also included is Hunter Rose &Company correspondence with British publishers regarding the publication of Jean Ingelow's novel Fated to be Free, Lynn Linton's Under Which King and Patricia Kemball Henry Kingsley's Number Seventeen, and others.

Collection Creator Biography:

Hunter, Rose & Company.

In 1860 George Mclean Rose and Robert Hunter worked at the printing offices of Thompson & Co. in Quebec, Canada. The next year Rose and Hunter bought out the company. In 1864 Hunter, Rose & Company successfully bid in its own name on a five-year contract as legislative printers to the Province of Canada. In 1865/66 their offices moved to Ottawa and again to Toronto in 1871. In 1965 the company became a division of the Copp Clark Pitman Co., and in 1983 the Hunter, Rose & Company was dissolved.
