Abstract: Consists of works, correspondence, documents, photographs, memorabilia, family papers, scrapbooks, and an autograph book (1880) of Charles Grosvenor Osgood, reflecting his role as one of Woodrow Wilson's original preceptors (1905) and the importance of the preceptorial system at Princeton. The collection contains typed manuscripts of Osgood's lectures on Milton, Spenser, and Samuel Johnson, addresses and note cards, and professional correspondence.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of works, correspondence, documents, photographs, memorabilia, family papers, scrapbooks, and an autograph book (1880) of Osgood, reflecting his role as one of Woodrow Wilson's original preceptors (1905) and the importance of the preceptorial system at Princeton. The collection contains typed manuscripts of Osgood's lectures on Milton, Spenser, and Samuel Johnson, addresses and note cards, and professional correspondence including letters relating to the publication of his book The Classical Mythology of Milton's English Poems (1900). Other correspondents include Albert S. Cook, John Grier Hibben, Henry Van Dyke, Woodrow Wilson, other Princeton associates, and many family members. There are also some student essays, grade books, and material concerning the Department of English. Also included are papers relating to the honorary degrees he received from Yale (1945) and Princeton (1951), and material from his estate. In addition, there are several essays on gardens by his wife, Isabella Sheldon Owen Osgood.

Osgood, Charles Grosvenor, 1871-1964

Charles Grosvenor Osgood was an educator and one of Woodrow Wilson's original preceptors. Born in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, in 1871, Osgood graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree and a Ph.D. He served as an assistant professor of English at the University of Colorado and instructor of English at Yale before moving to Princeton University as a preceptor in English in 1905. He was later an English professor, department chair, and professor emeritus. Among his many books are The Classical Mythology of Milton's English Poems, The Voice of England, and Poetry as a Means of Grace. Osgood died in 1964.

Acquisition:

A few manuscripts are a gift of Mrs. Robert N. Smyth. Additions to correspodence of Osgood is a gift of Janis O'Connor. Letter from Osgood to George Howard Williams is a gift of Sherrill Williams Mills.

Custodial History

The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.
